Neil Hodgson has announced his retirement from racing after a career that included stints in World Superbike, MotoGP, British Superbike and AMA Superbike racing.

A former WSBK and British Superbike Champion, Hodgson signed on to race for the Yamaha Motorpoint team in the British series. At the season opener at Brands Hatch, however, Hodgson crashed out of the warm-up session before the race, damaging a previously-injured shoulder. After several weeks of tests and visits to specialists, Hodgson has decided to call it a career.

“I am gutted obviously, I had a plan to come back to the UK and have some fun with Rob (Mac, of Yamaha Motorpoint) and his team,” says Hodgson. “It will take time for me to come to terms with this but it is the right decision. My shoulder will get back to probably 90% over the next couple of years so I will be able to have a normal life.”

Hodgson retires at 36, with the 2003 WSBK Championship and the 2000 British Superbike Championship to his name, both racing for Ducati. Hodgson also raced several seasons in AMA Superbike, with his best finish fifth in the 2006 standings. Hodgson also competed in several MotoGP and 500cc Grand Prix seasons.
